WE day

Zoey, Myah and Kaydyn, who are part of the UNESCO team, had the honour of attending WE Day at the MTS Center last Friday.  Mrs. Kobelka was invited as well.  The only way you can get a ticket for WE day is if you have earned it through kindness and good deeds. The students who are on the UNESCO team were invited to attend. It was an amazing event that everyone should have an opportunity to go to in their lifetime.  Paula Abdul, Margaret Trudeau, Chris Hatfield and numerous other celebrities were on hand to share their stories of their road to success.  Did you know that Paula Abdul's family did not have money for her to take dance classes, so she cleaned the dance studio  in order to pay for her lessons.  Chris Hatfield was very inspirational as well.  I encouraged the students to sign up for the Social Justice committee at ESS next year, so they have an opportunity to attend WE Day in 2017.

WE MUST ALWAYS REMEMBER

Remembrance Day

Mr. Starkey took the time to explain the Remembrance Day display case by the office to us.  We had some questions that he answered.  Did you know that Mr. Starkey's dad was a soldier in the WWII?  He even had a picture of him in the display case.  The Shaw family from Beausejour donated some medals that were on display.  Mr. Starkey looked up everyone and labeled them accordingly.  Also, Mr. Starkey took the time to come into our classroom and answer some questions that we had prepared.  It was very interesting to hear Mr. Starkey's stories about his time in the army.  We thanked him for his courage and service all those years that he worked to keep the peace for our country.

Guest Speaker from Siloam Mission

John Janzen (J.J.) was our guest speaker yesterday.  He is from Siloam Mission and since we could not go to Siloam this year he came to us.  We collected warm winter items for the homeless and presented him with them, so that he could deliver them for us.  J.J. told us an animated story about gardening that we were suppose to compare to the homeless.  It was not only entertaining, but also had a powerful message attached to it.  If we all pitch in and help someone who is different from us then we are helping change the world.  J.J. showed us what services Siloam offers to the homeless, like medical, workout room, art room, beds, transitional housing and a drop in center where people in need can come to and eat a meal.  Students were able to ask questions and learn more about Siloam and how they help the homeless.
It was nice to end our unit with J.J. as our guest speaker.  He mentioned many things that we were already aware of and many things that we weren't.  Thank you to J.J. for driving out to EBEYS to come and talk to us.

Dr. Leppelmann was our Guest Speaker during Science Class

Dr. Karen Leppelmann, a veterinarian from Beausejour Animal Hospital, came in to talk to Mr. Lestition's class and our class about the digestive and urinary systems during science class.  She showed us a video on a cat in surgery and pulled out the small intestine and the large intestine.  It was amazing how long the intestines were... They were pink in colour and shiny.  It almost looked like a photograph. She also showed us the cat's bladder, which was the size of a golf ball. Dr. Leppelmann went on to show us what happens to the food we eat by going through the steps of how our food gets digested, with some crackers.  We were all interested and happy that she answered our questions about the systems, but also our pet questions. She was impressed by what we already knew. The students did a good job by asking her deep thinking questions.  A BIG thank you goes out to Dr. Leppelmann for taking the time to talk to us and further our knowledge in science!

Roots of Empathy

We had a Birthday/Farewell party for C'nedra, our Roots of Empathy baby, today.  When the program started in the Fall, C'nedra was just a tiny baby and today she came walking through the door!  She surprised us so much by how quickly she developed.  Mrs. Hudek, the facilitator of the program, helped us read C'nedra's body language and how she might be feeling.  Learning those skills has helped us be more empathetic towards others.  Congratulations to everyone for completing the program!  It was an awesome experience!  We made a memory book and a wishing tree for C'nedra to take home.  Thank you to Mrs. Hudek for the beautiful flowers and being recognized for trying our best.  It is an experience we won't forget...

MUSEUM SLEEPOVER

The Museum Sleepover was awesome!!!  We had a very busy schedule... It started off with exploring the Science Gallery and then an amazing tour of the museum with our very own tour guide. After, the mad scientist had a performance and then we set up our sleeping quarters in the Science Gallery. We continued the evening with a planetarium show.  It was very interesting.  After the show we went to enjoy a pizza and juice bedtime snack.  There was so much pizza that no one left hungry and it was delicious!  The evening did not end there.  We got to go on a flashlight tour of the museum.  All the lights were off.  We had so much fun scaring our friends and making it a spooky time.  The flashlight tour ended at 12:00 and we were starting to get tired.  The teachers gave us an option of going to sleep or watching, "The Night at the Museum 1" movie.  Of course, most of us decided to check out the movie.  Everyone had so much fun that this event will not be forgotten for years to come...Thank you to all the parents who let us go on this Grade 5 adventure!
We sat in a Teepee and talked about it and got to ask questions.

Career Day at our School

Career Day was a huge success at our school on May 31st.  We had 22 presenters come into our school to talk about their chosen careers.  An N.H.L. official, who just finished his season, spoke to us at the assembly to kick off the day.  His name is Ryan Galloway and he has officiated in every arena in the N.H.L..  He told us that the Jets fans are the best in the N.H.L..  Also, Trevor Kidd was one of our presenters.  Trevor played in the N.H.L. as a goalie.  He had an excellent presentation and message for all of us.  Some other presenters were:  Firefighters, veterinarian, R.C.M.P. officer, medical doctor, chiropractor, fisheries biologist, entomologist, photographer, interior designer, engineer, graphic designer, chef who works at M.T.S. center, airplane mechanic, horse trainer, Forestry, Hydro worker, Cornel crème business owner and a woodworker.  It was a great day and we were inspired to work hard and accomplish our dreams.

Math Challenge Search

Today we had another challenge for Morning Math.  It was the window challenge.  Groups had to find a math problem, which was hidden on a window somewhere in the school.  All groups found their challenge and correctly answered their question.  Each group got a point.  Way to go Grade 5's!
Here is one group that found their question by the grade 3/4 classes.  I was impressed by their accuracy in solving their problem, especially after a long weekend.  A job well done!
We are learning how to multiply 2 digits by 2 digits in Math and the class came across a Math Challenge this morning.  The class was split up into 4 teams and each team had to find 3 math problems around the school.  Rules included: Find three sticky note math problems around the school, without making noise.  Solve the problems with your group.  Appoint a spokesperson who will be explaining your thinking to the class.
We had a lot of fun being active and solving the problems we found.  Way to go Grade 5's!  We'll see when the next CHALLENGE is....

I Love to Read Month

We had some celebrity readers in our school for I Love to Read Month.
Selena Kaatz and Ms. Fyfe from team Einarson came to read to us.  Selena grew up in Beausejour.  They autographed the poster we made and it is in the hallway by the gym.  Aaron and Kayden introduced them to groups that came to the library to listen to them read.  They were the champions at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts at the Sun Gro Centre.  They are off to the National Tournament, which starts on February 20th.  Good luck Team Manitoba!

Mr. Stevenson came to read to us as well.  It was nice to see him and talk to him, since he is a former teacher of our school.

Mr. Feilberg came to read to us.  He brought a suitcase of books that he enjoys to read.  He read us a book that his brother wrote and illustrated for his kids.  It was neat to see the detailed illustrations.  He even answered some grade 6 questions that we had.  He told us not to worry and said we will have more freedom at ESS because we are getting older and more mature.

February is "I Love to Read" month!

We are enjoying sharing the books that we have read on our, "Reading Takes You Places" bulletin board.  Students are enthusiasti...
